My Responsibilities

I was hired by Three Notch Group, Inc (referred to as Three Notch, formerly CDG, Inc) to serve as a technical writer in support of their geotechnical engineering team. At the time I began working, the company had recently gone through a name change and was working through the process of transitioning and developing a new, consistent and recognizable brand. I worked with geotechnical on both the proposal and reporting side of documentation. On the proposal side, I served as an editor, reviewing proposal as one of the last steps to the finalization of each document before being sent directly to clients to claim new projects for the company. I also developed new templates for each of the numerous types of construction and testing projects that prominently displayed the new brand standard fonts, colors, and designs. This helped the team transition quickly from the CDG brand and into the Three Notch look while retaining the language developed over the years as CDG to enable new client interaction as well as retention of long-standing clients familiar with the CDG standards of practice. Additionally, on the other end of projects, I assisted the team in writing and developing engineering reports for completed projects. These reports are client-facing and must be accessible to readers who may not have in-depth engineering knowledge while also being detailed in its descriptions and recommendations to accurately and safely guide the design of future construction or improvements to tested sites. I assisted our team from the beginning steps of developing a report from testing data to the editing and reviewing for document finalization. I also worked with the team leaders to develop numerous report templates that provide a basis for each type of report that the Three Notch geotechnical team writes to assist in report creation as well as preserve and standardize developed language that upholds the standards that Three Notch represents.

Completed Projects

  • Designed seven (7) new long form proposal template Word documents that incorporate new company letterheads, fonts, colors, and logos, while retaining standardized language to aid in brand transition while retaining the standard of quality expected by longstanding clients.
  • Designed two (2) new short form proposal templates as PDF documents that incorporate new company logos, fonts, and colors, while retaining standardized company language. These PDFs are live forms to protect their one-page design and provide text-fill boxes that auto-populate additional pages' information and have a drop down selection that changes the office letterhead to match any of the available offices that may be using the forms. These form functions save the users valuable time by making the proposal easy to fill while not having to worry about checking formatting. The drop down menu also means that users no longer have to search for office specific documentation and can instead reuse the same document regardless of which office is publishing the proposal, increasing the versatility of the templates and decreasing server clutter.

My Intern Project

My primary project as a technical writing intern was to work with each group within the Design Tools team to create an inclusive Quality Assurance document that details the processes and trainings used by the Design Tools Team. The final product consisted of a detailed 52-page document that outlines in step by step instructions the essential operations of the Design Tools Team. At the end of my internship, the document had cleared several rounds of editing and was moved to implementation for the next round of trainings for new teammates.

Product Spotlights

A secondary aspect of my internship was working with the Nucor Buildings Group Marketing Team. I had the privilege of sitting in on the Marketing Team's weekly meeting to develop an understanding of the projects and deliverables that the team produced for Buildings Group. During my time here, I learned to write and develop product spotlight reports, specifically for publishing on Kirby Buildings System's website (you can find these published here). I participated in the editing and refining process of many project spotlights and moved to write three project spotlights personally. These three spotlights are linked below.

The Hackathon Project

As an intern, I was apart of a team of interns for the Hackathon Project, a summer long project where each group identified an issue facing the company, researched the issue, and, using Microsoft's AI modeling technology, created a solution to the issue. My role on the team was team manager and data analyst. I organized the team's work load, meetings, and aided in research and data collections, including interviewing local teammates. We concluded the project by presenting our findings and conclusions in a group presentation over Teams.
