I believe in my Country, because it is a land of freedom and because it is my own home, and that I can best serve that country by "doing justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly with my God."

Family Research Council Internship
Washington, DC
Summer 2023, 12-Weeks

The door to Intern Alley (office space for FRC Interns) with two signs posted on the door. The first reads,
The Family Research Council (FRC) is a Christian, nonprofit public policy institute focused on researching and educating on Christian values that promote faith, family, and freedom. Their internship focused on supporting their interns in developing public policy, defending their faith, and growing in their relationship with Christ all while becoming fully immersed in the City of Washington, D.C.

During my time at FRC, I worked for the Center for Biblical Worldview. In additional to departmental work, our intern class was lead through a weekly class discussing primary topics in politics, participated in debates, and developed an end-of-term presentation on a chosen topic.
The U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, DC.
My time in D.C. also opened up the opportunity to be immersed in the events of the city and experience the deep history. I was able to attend events like the One-Year Anniversary of the Overturning of Roe v. Wade outside the Lincoln Memorial. I was also able to explore the historical landmarks and monuments of Washington, D.C. like touring The Library of Congress, The Capitol, and The Bible Museum and explore nearby locations like the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

As part of FRC, I was given the opportunity to be sent to Columbus, Ohio, and participate in the Forge Leadership Summit. Forge is a five-day training summit, focused on political leadership and speaking skills through training activities that developed networking, media interviewing, presenting, and political campaigning skills. Throughout the week, I participated in a campaign in a say training that walked us through the stages of organizing, promoting, and executing a political campaign as well as a mock legislature simulator where I developed an Ohio state bill, defended and passed my bill in committee, spoke on, defended, and passed my bill on the Ohio statehouse floor and questioned, debated, and voted on other participants' presented bills.

The Washington Stand

During my internship at Family Research Council, I published two articles with The Washington Stand. The first article, titled 'What Is a Woman?' Katie McCoy's New Book Provides Biblical Clarity,' promoted Katie McCoy's recently published book and was released on August 1, 2023 (the online article can be viewed below).

The second article I wrote was published on August 29, 2023 (the online article can be viewed below). This article, titled Push to Amend Wisconsin's Constitution Demonstrates the Necessity for In-Person Worship, responded to a recent constitutional amendment that was floated by the Wisconsin GOP in an effort to codify religious liberty protections and gave a critical discussion of worship, an important and critical value of Christian life.

Forge Leadership Summit

My view from a state representative desk in the Ohio Statehouse House Chambers.
During the Forge Summit in Ohio, we visited the Ohio Statehouse and finished our day of mock parliamentary procedure on the Ohio House Floor and in the Cabinet rooms. Each student was required to write a piece of legislation for the Summit that represents a policy that they would like to implement in Ohio.

My Bill's purpose statement read, "To ensure that organizations with religious or moral convictions are protected" and presented legislation that modeled Senators Tim Scott and James Lankford's Child Welfare Provider Inclusion Act of 2021. The purpose of this bill is to ensure that child welfare service providers have codified religious liberty protections in the state of Ohio to exercise their right to refrain from conduct that conflicts with their sincerely held religious beliefs.
